"Welcome to My Garage" Book Review

It seems like I'm always trying to explain difficult topics to my children. My girls ask so many interesting questions, and I constantly try to find a way to explain the answers and often find out for myself, because sometimes I just don't know. It's rare that a moment goes by that my five-year-old daughter Isabella isn't talking. Gabriella is two now and trailing right behind her.

Questions, questions, and more questions!

So, when I came across the book "Welcome to my Garage," from Siani Racing, Inc, I was so excited to review it. This book teaches children some really interesting parts in automobiles. Cars are a hot topic in our family. Just a few months ago, my father-in-law sold his garage that he built and ran for over 16 years. He has been an auto mechanic for over 25 years, and every time the girls spend time at their grandparent's house, they're playing with model cars.

What a great tool for teaching.

“Welcome To My Garage” is book one of a twenty-five book series. The mission of the series is to play a part in teaching reading, writing, arithmetic and integrity. Our unique characters will be fun for children, their parents and anyone who is an automobile enthusiast."

Siani  Racing, Inc

This first book in the series introduces parts/characters with names as members of a family. The author, Donald T. Mitchell, a former Professional Race Engine Builder & Machinist and father of three, uses a very kid friendly and basic approach to teaching, combined with great illustrations done by illustrator, Jim Manocchio (Emmy Award & Golden Medallion Award nominee).

Some of the parts introduced in this book are crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, cylinder head, cam gear, timing chain and engine block.

What's awesome about this book is all of these parts have a job to do and that fascinates children. They like to know how things work. They also want to know how the parts work together. Having a resource that is very basic and kid friendly not only gives the opportunity to teach them in a way that they understand, but parents may learn some things they don't already know in the process of reading to their kids. I did.

We're really looking forward to seeing the next 24 books in the "Welcome to My Garage" series.

Date Night - It's like the movie, only better!

Every married couple needs to date every now and then.

Not other people, of course. I'm talking about each other!

"Adventures in Dating for Married Couples," should have been a class at the university. Perhaps then we'd all know how to do it even better.

It seems as though all too often we get caught up in our daily routines, we think we're too busy, we have children to take care of, or we're just too tired to hang out after a long day or week of working.

Most of all we get lazy and don't want to take time to plan something.

Our marriages (lives) miss something when these excuses get in the way of our alone time together.

The spark we once knew becomes a dull flame.

That's okay to look at for a while, but we all know it's boring, and deep inside a longing for excitement is normal.

Who put out the fireworks?

I hate it when that happens. When it's time for a date with my husband we don't always make it out for some reason or another. I stay at home with the girls and he commutes to work each day, leaving us both exhausted. Since both kids are under 5, (by choice) we don't hire sitters to care for them.

That means when we see a movie, they see a movie too! So, the last film we saw was The Muppets.

Does that sound like a hot date or what? For kids!

So, I decided that this year I want to do something a little bit different. I'm going to commit to planning a few date nights, and I'll let hubby plan a few as well. Then I'm going to stay accountable to the commitment right here on my blog. Each date night will have it's own post.

With both of us planning dates I think we'll have a great time experiencing new adventures. I'm never going to ask hubby what he wants to do, but I'm going to plan things he most likely will enjoy (or should try at least once). I'm sure he'll get creative as well.

I hope this works! (I actually hate surprises myself)

My goal is to enjoy an exciting and adventurous date night with hubby once a month (at the least)!

So as he reads this post, the pressure is on. He'll know he has some planning to do.

We already kicked off a fun year of dating this month, when I surprised hubby with a trip to Top Golf in Alexandria, VA. It was one of the best dates we've ever had!

Stay posted for the Top Golf Date Night post, and consider a monthly date night challenge with your spouse. I'd love to read other adventures in dating for married couples.

Here are some fun Date Night Ideas to consider:

  1. Dinner, dinner, dinner! :)
  2. Sailing
  3. Hot Air Balloon Ride
  4. Concerts
  5. Wine Tasting
  6. Sky Diving
  7. Big City Tours
  8. Camping
  9. Volunteer Work
  10. Impersonating the Triplehorns

I'm hoping to cross a few things off of my "Bucket List" in the process!

(4 Step) Pumpkin Muffins You'd be Crazy Not to Make

One thing I love about Pinterest is exploring the pins of all of my followers. It's the quickest way to some of the most interesting links on the net.

Recently, while checking out one of my newest followers pins, I fell in love with some of the delicious food photos she posted!

One of my favorite photos led me to Sweet Verbena for the recipe, and I'm so glad I checked it out.

I followed four simple steps, and made the most scrumdiddlyumptious pumpkin muffins ever!

These muffins are so delicious, so soft, and so easy to make. (and they stayed fresh for several days)

All you need is:

  • Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1 Can Pumpkin Filling (15oz)

Then:

  1. Pour cake mix and pumpkin filling in a large bowl.
  2. Mix with handheld blender.
  3. Spoon mixture into muffin cups.
  4. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.

After my muffins cooled, I sprinkled them lightly with powdered sugar.

Don't they look great?
(tell the truth...lol)

You'd be crazy not to make them too!

Lysse Leggings Review

"Like my body?"

It's been a long time since I've slurred that famous Anna Nicole Smith line. Six years to be exact, and rightfully so!

Six years ago this March my first daughter, Isabella, was conceived. By April, my belly was already poking out.

Seriously...poking out!

Then two years ago I had my second daughter, Gabriella.

Enter the everlasting (Post Partum) Mommy Pooch

Since the summer of 2010, I've been a stay-at-home mom and part of my attire each day (when I'm not wrangling a vacuum cleaner looking ever so amazing in pajamas) are pairs of faded yoga pants or sweats.

Hot right? I know!

I get away with it, but some days I feel drab and just want to step it up. Just a little, nothing fancy.

So when Lysse Leggings called with an opportunity to review a pair of leggings, I was delighted to choose the Perfect Palazzo pant! I used to favor palazzo's back in 1995 and they are by far the most comfortable design ever.

My regular yoga pants have a low cut waist, so there isn't any stomach coverage or support at all. Pre baby days that was fine, but post baby days...not so cute after meals. You know what I mean?

So, the benefit in wearing the Lysse palazzo pant is in the waist. It has tummy control, so the waistline is high enough that any "mommy pooch" is minimized or disappears completely!

What is also important to me is not only the fit, but how I feel. In the Lysse pants I feel very comfortable. The material is light, and also very flexible. I hate wearing anything too bulky or stiff. I also hate being wrapped in clothing that is too tight.

There are a lot of options to choose from so if I want to wear pencil skirts with control Lysse has two designs. I'm a huge fan of pencil skirts! The last time I wore one though was the day I announced my pregnancy in 2009. There is no give in the waist.

Lysse to the rescue!

I'm really excited about being introduced to Lysse, because so many of the pants at my favorite stores don't flatter or flatten the stomach. It's always nice to have a go to brand of pants in different styles for all of my needs.

It's also nice that they have a control top tank. The other part of my daily stay-at-home mom ensemble.

After having my palazzo pants taken up about an inch, I'm surely going to wear them out (as in never take them off!)

They're perfect for my lifestyle.

Be Good to Your Daughters, They Will Love Like You Do

Isabella: "I am married to Daddy."
Gabriella: "No, I am married to Daddy!"

"Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too"

When I hear those lyrics I just melt. It takes me back to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on February 10, 2010.

It was there that I sat in the second to the last row of the nosebleed seats with my husband and listened to John Mayer give the concert of his life.

The sound was so amazing. Whenever I would shut my eyes, I was front row and center at a private MTV Unplugged jam.

And when this song was being sung, all I could think was "Man, this John Mayer fellow is an amazing musician. He really knows his stuff."

Funny though, the "stuff" I was referring to isn't his music, but the message in the song!

The words are so important for every father and mother to hear.

On a night where he spent a significant amount of time tearing up and apologizing to his fans for his derogatory statements during his most recent (at the time) interview with an adult entertainment magazine, he couldn't have said anything more right!

At last, he was saying words we all really need to hear and do.

"Be good to your daughters! Daughters will love like you do!"

I believe this with all of my heart. I witness it daily.

Every bit of love I pour into my girls is reflected in the way that each of them speaks, behaves, and loves in return.

Gabriella: "I just love the babies!"

My heart beats harder!

I think part of the problems in this world today are a result of love not given. All too often children are not treated well and they are suffering inside. The wounds are there whether we see them or not. They will appear in some form or fashion sooner or later.

Love is something we all need.

I'm not talking about the "Of course I love my kids, I made them," love. Some people slide by with the notion that a parent's love comes by default. It doesn't.

Love is intentional!

  • Love is in the way you cleaned the umbilical chord with the most steady hand for fear that it hurts your baby, even when the nurse tells you the gentle cleaning doesn't bother her at all.

  • Love is being patient enough to apply cream to your toddler to prevent diaper rash, even when she's kicking you in the gut to get away.

  • Love is hosting several of your young daughter's closest friends at a sleepover (with tons of drama) and spoiling them, because it means so much to her.

  • Love is telling your daughter she is the most beautiful girl in the world and telling her all the reasons why.

  • Love is being a parent first to your teenaged daughter and not a friend, setting an example for her to follow. It is teaching her to love and value herself and God.

  • Love is staying up late with your college aged daughter to go to the Walmart in the middle of the night and push her in a cart giggling like best friends, even though you'd probably rather be at home.

  • Love is getting a late night call from your adult daughter who is upset, and you jump in your car, on a bus, or the first plane to be by her side, wherever she is.

She will love like you did these things!

That's all we hope for as parents. That we raise our children to be wonderful, happy, full of life, and with lots of love in their hearts.

It doesn't just happen over night and we don't just do it because. It is an intentional effort. We must treat them good. We must show them love so they know how to give and receive love.

With every kiss, hug, compliment I give, or recital I attend, or game I play with my girls, I am purposely planting a seed of love that I hope my daughters return to the world.

I want the men of my daughter's dreams to notice that my girls have been treated well and are very loved! Then I want them to figure out a way to love my girls even more!

So, I pray to God that other parents are loving their boys just as much.

Get a Hot Body by Freezing the Fat with CoolSculpting

Have you ever looked down at your stomach and thought, "If I could only get rid of this itty bitty pooch?"

Who hasn't, right? (especially after childbirth)

Some people think as tiny as I am I could never possibly feel that way, but even I have a pooch.

I have always had a small pooch, but now that I've had two children and experienced drastic weight gain with my second, my pooch is even bigger than it has ever been.

I don't hate it, but I definitely don't like it either.

So what can be done about it?

Exercising is always an option, and dieting as well, but what about the fat that doesn't go anywhere no matter what you do?

Well, recently I've learned about a medical procedure approved by the FDA, that can be done to freeze the fat permanently.

It's called CoolSculpting by Zeltiq.

CoolSculpting is done over the course of 2-4 months in an office where a gel pack is applied to the stomach area and a machine is used to freeze fat cells.

This is not a procedure for people who want to loose weight, but for people who want to change the contour of their body.

The process is very easy and patients have claimed it to be virtually pain-free. During the 1-3 hour procedure, cold is applied, but not-invasively. A machine is them placed against the stomach or problem area and creating a suction is gently starts to lower the temperature of the fat cells over the course of the office visit.

Patients are able to relax comfortably and are pain free with no downtime after the visit. The total transformation will take anywhere from 2-4 months.

Benefits of CoolSculpting by Zeltiq are:

  • It targets and cools fat cells
  • No damage to nerves or other tissue
  • Fat cells shrink and die permanently
  • Short office visits (1-3 hours)
  • Results in as little as 3 weeks
  • No incisions, anesthesia, or downtime

Does this sound like the right procedure for you? If so...

Enter to win the
"CoolSculpting" Giveaway
from Getting Gorgeous, LLC.

One winner from 14 participating blogs will win the CoolSculpting procedure, Valued at $2,500. Winner to be chosen by the CoolSculpting team.

Happy New Year - Pigs in Blankets in Hand!

To start off the new year I took some time to teach Isabella how to make pigs in a blanket.

She loves making snacks any time and she was really excited to roll up her sleeves and learn to make this  kid friendly recipe!

The pigs in a blanket were quick and easy to make, but also really tasty.

There's nothing like ringing in the new year on a full stomach!

I was impressed by the end result and have placed this dish on the top of my potluck platters list.

To make these little bite sized piggies, you will need:

  • 1 pack of mini smoked sausages
  • 1 can of crescent rolls (8 count)

Then:

  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees
  2. Cut each crescent roll in half to make 16
  3. Roll one sausage link in each roll starting at the thickest end (be sure to place the rolled sausages with the pointed dough tips down)
  4. Bake for 12-15 minutes

These are perfect for any day, and they are a "must have" for any game day! (think Super Bowl)
