I Had a Dream...

I had a dream while co-sleeping with my new baby (Isabella) that birds were diving at us attacking us. I started swiping the air and then cradled baby and dove off the bed "Rambo-style" screaming. Hubby ran into the room only to find us huddled on the floor. It looked weird, but we were fine.

My instincts were real, the birds were not...EMBARASSING!

Nintendo DS Imagine Fashion Stylist Review

Recently, I had the pleasure of reviewing the Nintendo DS Style Lab Fashion Design game. It was a fun review, because my four year old daughter, Isabella, is quite the little gamer.

I handed the game over to her and within minutes she figured out how to play it, and she really enjoyed herself. So when the request for a review came through for the Nintendo DS Imagine Fashion Stylist game, I immediately accepted.

The goal of this game is to run a fashion mall and open glamorous boutiques, find outfits for customers and give clients makeovers.

Players can open new franchises, work with celebrities, organize fashion shows and ultimately gain fame, becoming an "Ultimate Fashion Expert."

Although the two games have similarities, it turned out that this game was not what I was expecting.

It was a bit more complicated than the first game and it wasn't very interesting. Isabella didn't favor the game and neither did I.

I think it would've been great to have had less text to read and better graphics.

Bella changing hair styles and colors on a character

For a child as young as four, reading so much text will require the help of an adult, but Isabella also knows how to advance through it. Her favorite part of the game was creating different looks on the characters. Beyond that she let me know that she was "bored."

Other games may get away with graphics that resemble cheap clip art, but fashion games really need to be designed better. It doesn't matter what the age of a person is, I think we all appreciate good design. My daughter loves several fashion related games and plays them daily, unfortunately this one did not get her vote.

Imagine Fashion Stylist is rated "E" for Everyone (ages 6-8) and can be purchased at ToysRUs.com!

*Note: Although this game's suggested age range for players is 6-8 years old, Isabella has been playing advanced electronic games for over two years. Therefore, her opinion is highly regarded.

While Ubisoft provided me with this game to review, the opinions I've expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint. It's Snack Time - Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Chef William Bednar, Executive Chef at the National Museum of American History, as a guest on "It's Snack Time!", and Isabella had a ball.

It was very exciting for her to welcome her first guest, but also to be able to create another delicious treat.
Making chocolate covered strawberries were by far one of her favorite fun snacks to create.

She couldn't wait to taste test them afterwards.

As a mom who is falling more in love with chocolate, I was really looking forward to the finished product myself!

Since this is a no-bake recipe and requires very little preparation, I would recommend creating this with kids of all ages. This recipe is very easy and quick. It's also a lot of fun!

You and your child will need:

  • Strawberries
  • Dark Chocolate Chips
  • White Chocolate Candy Pieces
  • Sandwich bags (optional for drizzling)
  • Scissors (optional for drizzling)

Now, let's get started:

Having a Glider Helped Me Bond With My Premature Babies

At 33 weeks into my pregnancy, going in for my routine checkup was just that, routine. At least that's what I thought. I had no idea that one hour after arriving I would go into premature labor, and ten hours later I would deliver my first baby.

It was a very surreal experience. I was afraid, and I had not planned or prepared for this day. At least not to happen like this.

I thought I would have time to pack a birthing bag, complete with my favorite robe, slippers, CD's, and incense (the whole kit and caboodle). I thought the nursery would be complete and everyone I loved would be at the hospital to welcome baby and comfort me. (wishful thinking)

I was not ready. I didn't even know how to hold a baby yet.

When the nurse came to me and told me I was in labor and that I was going to have a premature baby that day, she also told me that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staff would be present to take the baby to the NICU immediately after delivery. She said to expect a baby 2-3lbs.

I was terrified!

After I delivered and was given permission to visit my precious little baby in the NICU, I was very excited, but nervous. I had never been to a NICU before, nor had I ever seen a baby so tiny. My baby was actually one of the larger babies, at 4lbs 11oz, yet she was very small compared to full term babies.

I was not allowed to hold her. She was hooked up to monitors by at least three to four wires and leads 24 hours a day, as well as an oxygen and a feeding tube in her nose and mouth. I was sad. I felt robbed. This isn't the "motherhood" I was expecting, but I tried my best to deal with it.

Everyday and almost every moment, I was at my baby's bedside in the NICU. I learned to change her diapers, tube feed her, brush her hair, and dress her. I was still very much a mom, just in a different environment.

As suggested by one of her nurses, I cradled her bottom and her head to simulate the womb and that is how I held her. Due to her umbilical catheter, I was told she could not be picked up.

Finally after four days, the catheter was taken out, and I was given permission to pick her up and hold her. As exciting as it sounds, and as long as I had waited for this moment, I was so scared.

My baby was delicate, tiny, and so precious. I didn't want to mess up and drop her. Although she fit perfectly in my tiny arms, she felt so frail.

Gliders to the rescue

Fortunately for me, our NICU had a glider at the bedside of every baby. I had never used one before, but when I was given the opportunity to hold my baby for the first time, the glider gave me the support and comfort I needed to feel confident about not hurting my baby.

If you've ever held a premature baby in the NICU, you know how skinny and lightweight they are.

Every moment I spent getting to know my baby, I spent rocking her in the glider. Eventually, I pulled a second glider over to let hubby bond with her too.

The glider really helped me bond with my baby

Whenever I had the chance to feed and change her, I always ended up in the glider, napping with her as she slept in my arms. I couldn't rock her enough.

As the days went by she seemed to get heavier in my arms and I had a firmer grip. My comfort level had grown and so did my confidence about holding her properly. Being in the glider with her allowed me to practice cradling her, without the fear of dropping her. It also gave her a sense of stability that I could not provide initially. I didn't have any experience holding a newborn preemie before then. I was really getting into the groove of motherhood.

We enjoyed being together so much!

After two full weeks in the NICU, and countless hours rocking back and forth in the glider, my bond with my tiny baby was so strong that I couldn't wait to take her home.

Eventually, we did go home and three years later, I returned to the NICU again, for the first two weeks of my second baby's life.

Same song, second verse!

Thankfully, a glider was provided by her bedside as well, and we spent every waking moment rocking and bonding in it too.

It was a blessing!

  • Motherhood Created Superwoman

"I don't know how you do it. OMG!!! Yesterday morning had to get myself and the girls dressed and out all by myself since Shani was as school. I had to make 3 trips to the car. That's crazy. I would never go anywhere. Like I could not believe how much work that is. I was exhausted. I'd rather work any day. LOL!"

Yesterday, I received the BEST compliment I have ever received in the form of a statement.

My sister, who is a mother of two girls, ages twenty and fourteen, recently babysat my girls for two days and three nights, sent me the statement above via text.

    I was flattered!

She walked in my shoes and she recognized how difficult day to day outings with two small children are.

    I love that!

It seems like it's all too often that people see you arrive at places never knowing or caring what it took to get there. They often have no idea what it's like.

My sister got it right! "It is HARD!"

It meant so much to hear that from her. She has raised two small children before, so she could've acted like getting my girls dressed, packed, and out of the door was a piece of cake, but she was being genuinely honest.

    It was exhausting.

Somehow, we mothers manage like heroes. We show up for work, playdates, and appointments. We shop, cook, clean, travel and save the day, all without missing a beat!

My baby may be barefoot, but there is a reason for that. ;)

What is it like for you managing outings with your kids?

Would you agree that "Motherhood Created Superwoman?"

  • The "Great Trade-In" Event at Babies“R”Us and Toys“R”Us Ends 2/21

Out with the old. In with the new!

There are only 5 days left to take advantage of the "Great Trade-In" event going on at Babies“R”Us and Toys“R”Us.

Until Monday, February 21, stores nationwide are holding the “Great Trade-In” event, giving customers the opportunity to trade-in any used cribs, car seats, bassinets, strollers, travel systems, play yards, toddler beds or high chairs in exchange for a 25% savings on the purchase of any new baby item*.

This is a great opportunity for all of us who have items that have recently been recalled to trade them in instead of just throwing them away, and receive credit toward replacements.

It's a pain to replace items so soon after Christmas, but I have noticed in the past few months that ALL drop-side cribs and many carseats and strollers alone have had major recalls. So many items have been passed down in our homes for years or we purchased them second-hand.

Do you know if you have recalled products in use?

It is important for parents to understand that the products that are often sold at garage sales, on Craigslist, and in other classified ads, could very well be listed on the CPSC List of recalled baby/children products, and are therefore not safe to purchase or use. Even at such low prices, the safety of our children comes first!

In my house I have had 3 recalled products in the past few years.

Make sure you visit your local Babies“R”Us or Toys“R”Us store to trade-in your used crib or baby product as soon as possible, because the credit is only good for the day of the trade-in. This way you'll have a better chance that the items you want are still in stock.

  • Trade-in purchases are valid on any of the product categories mentioned above, from select manufacturers.

  • Aquaphor Healing Ointment Review

Winter is always so harsh on skin and it is such an annoying season. Being dry, itchy, and chaffing is most often a very uncomfortable situation for anyone. Especially for babies.

Our babies rely on us to protect them and keep their skin dry, clean, and moisturized. That is why having the opportunity to review Aquaphor Healing Ointment has been very beneficial to me.

I never considered using Aquaphor before, because I have been so loyal to the current brands I’ve been using. I’m glad I did. I was very pleased with the results.

I gave my baby Gabriella a bath and washed her hair with the Aquaphor Baby Gentle Wash & Shampoo during bath time, and it was very gentle. It wasn’t overly sudsy, but gave enough suds to have our regular "mohawk fun" time. (all kids love that, right!)

After the bath, I used to Aquaphor Healing Ointment to moisturize both Gabriella and my oldest daughter Isabella’s driest parts (elbows, knees, feet). I then used the ointment for Gabby’s diaper change.

My girls were left very smooth and the ointment didn't leave too much of a greasy residue. Since it seemed to really be gentle on them, I decided to try a little on myself as well. It is also recommended for moms.

I found that the ointment worked well to moisturize my hands, which get really dry during the day from washing after diaper changes and doing dishes. I also have been putting it on my lips and it’s been working really well for me. They get really chapped year round, but especially in the winter.

My overall reaction to the Aquaphor line for babies is extremely positive, because it is fragrance free, dye free, and preservative-free, it is very gentle and perfect for sensitive skin.

Some of the benefits of Aquaphor are:

    • Temporarily protects minor: cuts, scrapes, and burns
    • Temporarily protects and helps relive chapped or cracked skin
    • Temporarily protects and helps relive chapped lips
    • Helps protect from the drying effects of wind and cold weather
    • Helps treat and prevent diaper rash
    • Protects chaffed skin associated with diaper rash
    • Helps protect babies from wetness between diaper changes
    • Reduces diaper rash within six hours

    Active Ingredients
    Petrolatum - 41 %Skin Protectant Ointment

    Inactive Ingredients
Mineral Oil , Ceresin , Lanolin Alcohol , Panthenol , Glycerin Bisabolol

Not Finding Out & Bebe Au Lait Giveaway (CLOSED)

When I found out I was pregnant with my first child, I was so excited. I couldn't wait to decorate the nursery that my husband and I prayed over the day we closed on our "family" home. Everything was a big deal and the details were very important to me. From day to day emails about the development of the baby to the birth plan of my dreams, I was planning and announcing it all.

One of the major announcements of my pregnancy was the sex of the precious baby we were expecting.

I was beyond excited to share that we were having a (drum roll)...

What about you? Are you waiting on the edge of your seat to find out what the gender of your baby is? Or are you sitting calmly while everyone around you is asking why you're "not finding out?"

It's funny that it matters so much to some and not to others to know the sex of their child early on, but no matter what we choose to do it's always just as much of a surprise to see our babies on the day of delivery.

From the moment I announced we were having a girl, my family and friends were just as excited as I was. My baby showers were themed with white and shades of pink everywhere. I also received pink everything.

    I loved it!

It's not quite the same for moms who are not finding out though. Purchases made are often in green, yellow, and cream with tan accents, instead of the traditional pinks and blues.

It doesn't have to be that way though. Fortunately, thanks to Kelly Boyington, creator of NotFindingOut.com, there is an online registry that is just as fun for moms who aren't finding out. The registry helps keep the secret of the baby's sex, but still allows for the moms-to-be to receive the appropriate color for baby based upon the sex after their delivery!

Perfect for receiving gender specific items, without ruining the surprise.

Parents can register for items in a boy version and girl version, and when the baby is born and the sex is confirmed, all of their purchased items will be shipped out accordingly!

    How awesome is that?

Watch Kelly Boyington discuss in detail how this registry works:

"Nationally, 41% of all women are preferring not to find out the sex of the baby."

Never be too far away from your little one again.

With Hallmark Recordable Storybooks, loved ones can leave behind the most precious gift to any child, their voice.

With voice-capture technology, a reader's voice is recorded directly into the storybook. Each time the page is turned, the text on the page being viewed is read out loud by the reader.

This past Christmas, my mother gave my two little girls a recordable book, and they absolutely love it. She used to be their caretaker and since I am now a stay at home mom, they do miss seeing her everyday. Having a book read by her is so special. We always have her close by even when she is not so near. Especially this week, while she was in the hospital.

We also love the All the Ways I Love You book. Recently, I received this book during the BlissDom Conference, and I was so glad. I wanted to have a book to record in my own voice for my girls as well.

Now we have two special recordable books.

These books are an excellent gift choice for any day of the year, but since Valentine's Day is Monday, giving one would be the perfect Valentine for any little one. They can be purchased at your local Hallmark store and retail for $29.95.

Daringly Domestic - Shrimp with Artichoke Hearts and Tomatoes

Today's meal is absolutely delicious. If you love shrimp, you should definitely try this 15 minute meal from ReadySetEat in your kitchen.

I loved making this dinner, because of the short prep and cook time. Since I have two small children, I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to being in the kitchen, but I also don't want to buy fast food everyday.

If you're short on time, but would like to serve a meal a that is quick, easy, and neither a pizza or chicken nuggets, this is a great option for you.

    You will need:

2 cups instant brown rice, uncooked
1 can (14.5 oz each) Hunt's® Diced Tomatoes with Basil, Garlic and Oregano, undrained
1 can (14 oz each) quartered artichoke hearts in water, drained
1 pound medium peeled and deveined shrimp with tail, thawed if frozen
    1/2 cup sliced green onions
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
    Lemon wedges, optional

    Directions:

Cook rice according to package directions. Meanwhile, place undrained tomatoes and artichokes in 10-inch skillet. Cook over medium-high heat 4 to 5 minutes or just until boiling.

Add shrimp; cook 2 to 3 minutes more or just until shrimp turn pink, stirring frequently. Stir in remaining ingredients, except lemon. (I actually cooked my shrimp in a separate skillet and combined the ingredients in the next step)

Serve over rice with a squeeze of lemon juice, if desired.

    Summer Infant Video Monitors Recall

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Summer Infant Inc., has announced a voluntary recall on 1.7 million video baby monitors with electrical cords. The recalled monitors and cameras will receive new permanent product warning labels and revised mounting instructions.

The recall is for all corded Summer Infant Video Monitors purchased between January 2003 and February 2011. The cords are said to present a strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers if placed too close to a crib or within reach.

Over the past year, there have been two reported infant strangulation deaths, and seven total since 2004.

The CPSC has advised that parents and caregivers never place these and other corded cameras within three feet of a crib, due to strangulation risks.

Consumers should contact Summer Infant toll-free at (800) 426-8627 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm's website at www.summerinfant.com/Home/Product-Recall.aspx to receive a new permanent electric cord warning label about the strangulation risk and revised instructions about how to safely mount camera and keep cords out of children’s reach.

A Life Lesson Learned While Vacuuming

I don't know what it's like at your house, but at mine I am constantly having to go behind my kids and vacuum crumbs all day. As soon I get the crumbs up, it's not long before more are scattered on the floor.

Since I do this at least two to three times a day, my approach to cleaning the crumbs is normally to take the vacuum out in attack mode. I whip the mouth through the crumbs quickly sucking all the crumbs up with hurried strokes. Left, right, front, back. It's fast, but afterwards I am tired and frustrated.

Yesterday, as I did this I decided to stop the whipping action and just push front to back. I was still vacuuming the crumbs, but I wasn't all over the place. I used a steady focused motion, a planned approach that didn't tire me out. In the end the result was the same.

A clean floor! (with no crumbs left behind)

I started thinking about my actions and I compared it to life. How often to we have tasks to do that we "attack" with quick, unfocused motions, with no plan or direction, only to wear ourselves out in the end? How many tasks did we leave undone in our rush?

We've all seen those people who are sprinting through the day going from one task to the next, then back to the same task all over again trying to finish them all, but with no direction. They're
intimidated by their "To Do" list and their response is to go into attack mode.

"I'll knock these tasks off quickly, with time to spare", is what they think, but at the end of the night, I imagine they finally just crash. They're tired and worn out. It happens to me.

    There is no energy left.

So, what should be done to fix this problem. How can we get through our daily tasks in life but still have energy at the end of the day?

    Slow down, focus, and plan.

I learned yesterday, that when I attempted to complete the task of vacuuming crumbs, I was just burning a lot of energy. I attacked those crumbs, whipping the vacuum through them like they were multiplying before me. I was focused on the task at hand, but I did not plan the proper approach.

I was acting like a maniac trying to get the vacuuming done.

By slowing down, taking my time and changing my strokes, I accomplished my goal with even better results.

I vacuumed better than ever before.

When it comes to our everyday tasks, we really do need to do the same. If we take our time, focus, and direct our energy in the right direction, we will complete our goals with energy to spare (and believe it or not, less mistakes).

Who knew a lesson could be learned by vacuuming?

Suddenly, my "To Do" list isn't looking so intimidating. It doesn't have to be attacked to be completed!
