Walmart Baby Days Giveaway ($50 Gift Card, Aveeno, or Johnson's Set) CLOSED

No matter how many times I tell myself I am going to be finished potty training this week, it never happens.

I can rattle off a million reasons why:

  • I'm busy
  • My kid just isn't ready
  • It's not convenient right now
  • We're going through a transition period
  • I'm already trying to do some other training
  • We had an earthquake, a hurricane, and a flood in one week...

Well, that last one isn't that good, but I can make it sound convincing.

Trust me!

But the truth is...there is no excuse.

I have no excuse other than than the fact that I just haven't been consistent all year.

I probably shouldn't admit it (but it was so much fun), I was one of the moms chosen this year to host a Huggies "Potty Dance" Party for my mommy friends. In March, we celebrated the start of potty training with our little ones.

We had a great time! As you can see.

I showed off products available for potty training and it was a success...(as far as parties are concerned)!

My girls were front and center, showing the other children how to do the "potty dance."

Go Girls!

Well, that was six months ago, and here were are...still potty training. But let me tell you why and how we plan to finish potty training COMPLETELY, (if possible) within the next two weeks...

What is YOUR potty training ritual?

Here is a list of the potty training products that I purchased for $50 at Walmart to get started:

I would suggest using a kiddie stool to help kids with their confidence. It's best for them not to have their feet dangling and trying to balance on the toilet too.

As a new mom, I'd love to win the $50 Walmart gift card. With it, I'd buy diapers, wipes and formula (all newborn necessities :).

p.s.- here's my tip for potty training, start early, adopt a pattern and stay consistent.

My daughter had it down, but wouldn't take the time to go if she had a pull-up on. I finally decreed that I was no longer buying any, and within that same week, we were good! Sometimes knowing they have a backup keeps them from actually trying.

Since Laura was diagnosed with severe milk allergies, I like products that are dairy free and labelled so that is easy to tell. Unfortunately, not all baby products do that!

Best training tip is follow your child's lead. Help them figure out when the time to potty train is, but don't force them if they don't have the maturity. Have them pick out undies that they love the character on and remind them "that so and so does not like to get pee on them". Reward the small stuff so they take pride in it, but don't punish the mistakes. Take those as an opportunity for your LO to learn... Don't get stressed that so and so's kid is potty trained at this time... How many kindergartners are still sporting their huggies?

As a mother of a newborn I am nowhere near potty training, BUT it is something that I know I will have to deal with in the future.  I once asked my mom how she had my 2 sisters and I potty trained by the time we were 1 (that was not a typo, all three of us were potty trained by
1).

She said that little kids want to imitate their parents so she would sit us on the potty while she used the bathroom and eventually we just got it.  This may not be the best method for mother's who might be shy about using the bathroom with their kids, but for those of you who aren't shy try it out and let me know how it works.

If it does work think of the money you will save on diapers!  Good luck!

Potty training advice: pull-ups are great, but try not to rely on them for too long--I've known parents who used pull-ups to rush kids into training when they weren't ready, then found that they needed the pull-ups for months or even years after they were supposedly trained!
